Where does Qiviut come from?
Muskox are prehistoric goats that currently live in the northern arctic region.
They’re survivals of the last ice age that co-existed with Mammoths and Mastodons.
The insulating warmth of qiviut is one of the principal reasons Muskox can survive the arctic winters.
Their long outer layer, known as the “guard hair” protects the Muskox from the cold arctic winters.
Underneath the long guard hair is the fine undercoat of the Muskox known as qiviut (kiv-ee-ute) in the Native Alaskan Inuit language.
Since Muskox aren’t domesticated, our fibers are collected off the bushes and tundra where the muskox had shed.
Because of this, production is often very limited.

When I opened the package, I was surprised how thin was the yarn! I didn't expect that, I was purchased first time! The yarn was so soft and beautiful, but so thin and delicate. I never did any project with such of this yarn.
I bought also 2 patterns.
I start with metal needles, exactly the same number as recommended. But the loops was slipped off the needles. So, I switched them for bamboo, and it was perfect!
Pattern... probably it was good, but my primary language is russian, and it was so hard to understand it. So, I switched to russian language, used YouTube, found some simple lace pattern and made nice scarf! After wearing it for about 2 days ( we have a snow days in Florida this year) , the scarf became narrower and longer. Maybe next time I need to make the scarf more wider ( I made 36 loops as recommended the pattern).

I received qiviut yarn as a retirement gift. Wow! But I wanted to knit a cardigan and wanted some merino in there to help it hold its shape. Giovanna was amazing. She allowed me to return the gifted yarn and exchange for what I wanted and provided the information I asked about. It took me a year to knit my project, but I am in love with it!! Hitofude Cardigan (pattern in Ravelry). But mostly, I LOVED working with this yarn. I thought it would be tricky, but it is not. It is strong and well-spun. Beautifully soft with a little bit of sheen from the silk in it. This yarn is just perfect. Thank you Giovanna!!
Once in a while, a knitter needs to treat herself. I’m so glad I did, this yarn is ultra soft, and a lovely color. Making a neck scarf with luxury blend in colorway 5015 medium pink. The shipping was incredibly fast. I’ll be back for more.
I am using four balls of the “Luxury Blend” in “Celestial Blue”, which is a rich sapphire color, between ultramarine and navy. It’s delightful to knit with!
I bought two skeins of the qiviuk/merino/silk blend for myself for my birthday. I'm currently working up a cabled cowl with them. It's so beautiful and soft! I love the subtle halo. This yarn might become my yearly birthday present to myself!
I have ordered from Windy Valley several times now. I have been pleased with all my purchases. I knit this on 3.5mm dp needles. I still had some yarn left over from one ball, enough to add a couple more inches.
