Yarns are 1oz 28 grams lace weight and 217.41 yards per ball.
The size of the needles/crochet and gauge really depend on the pattern. We have projects that use size US 00 all the way to size US 7, the size most common is US 5 or 3.75mm.

Where does Qiviut come from?
From the delicate under-wool of the Arctic Muskox
Muskox are prehistoric goats that currently live in the northern arctic region.
They’re survivals of the last ice age that co-existed with Mammoths and Mastodons.
The insulating warmth of qiviut is one of the principal reasons Muskox can survive the arctic winters.
Their long outer layer, known as the “guard hair” protects the Muskox from the cold arctic winters.
Underneath the long guard hair is the fine undercoat of the Muskox known as qiviut (kiv-ee-ute) in the Native Alaskan Inuit language.
Since Muskox aren’t domesticated, our fibers are collected off the bushes and tundra where the muskox had shed.
Because of this, production is often very limited.

I have submitted a previous 5 star review but didn’t include a comment. I worked the Moose scarf pattern in Qiviuk and cannot speak highly enough of the amazing quality of that yarn. I also just cast on the Bison Lace Scarf with Vicuña. I am so excited to feel the luxury of this yarn around my neck. The quality of yarns from Windy Valley Muskox cannot be matched. I had been in contact with Windy Valley to ask a number of questions. Each email I sent was promptly answered, AND by a real person, no form letters. When I ordered for the first time the colour I wanted was not in stock. Giovanna went above and beyond to try and find the colour I wanted and found it in another location. In the end I went with the substitute colour......stepping out of my comfort zone!!! the colour I chose is lovely and I cannot wait to sink my knitting needles into the Qiviut, Marino and Silk blend I have chosen. I've not begun the project because the Christmas season and other commitments are occupying all my time at the moment.
It shouldn’t be just yarn but the softest yarn ever !!.. I haven’t started my project yet I love to just feel and smell my material.

Once you finish knitting your project, please block it.
For next washes please use a mild soap and do not wring. Roll up with a towel and gently squeeze out all the water. Scrunch the garment into a small mound and shape as it dries.
1 skein: scarf, hat, neck warmer, or fingerless gloves.
2 skeins: hat, gloves, smokering, cowls, or small shawl.
4-5 skeins: shawl or vest.
8+ skeins: shawl or sweater.
Muskox shed their under-wool fiber naturally each spring, which is then hand-collected from either the tundra, bushes, or branches. We work with locals in Northern communities to gather the fiber.
We get this precious Muskox resource with a clear commitment to social and environmental responsibility.
